Doll exhibition at Garuda Mall

 Dear friends ,

Dolls fest

I would like to share my wonderful experience of participating in the doll fest held at Garuda Mall , Bengaluru on October 9th 2023.

There was around 1008 dolls of  gods and goddess planned for the doll fes, which had dolls of all type like Quilling, Clay, Fabric, etc ... . I had taken the responsibility of making Quilling dolls representing the Twelve Rashi Devatas with their vahans (animal/bird vehicles) , it took me more than a month to complete the set , first I had to get all the images of devatas with their respective vahans , get the material and started work on them, more than devatas making their vahans was a challenge like I had to make around 15 Horses , lions , Crow, Deer and Rams , Finally got everything on time :)

I had packed all my Rashi devata dolls which were to be displayed at the Mall. I went on 8th evening to arrange my dolls. It was raining heavily in the evening and husband was not willing to travel,  but somehow I managed to nudge him and reached the venue. The venue was on the ground floor.. At the centre ,  a big place was allocated with the golu stands neatly arranged. The doll stands were partitioned with the names of gods & goddess for easy identification and avoiding any crowding. I saw my dolls nameboard ( Rashi Devata ) on the left side. Some Gods and Goddessess dolls  were already displayed . It was looking so nice.

All the participants were busy arranging their beautiful creations. Some of my friends came from Chennai , Hyderabad . I started arranging my dolls. Two steps were assigned to my dolls. So I kept 6 on each step. I had made dolls of the 12 Rashi Devatas which include:

  1.  Mesha Rashi Devata
  2. Vrishabha Rashi Devata
  3. Mithuna Rashi Devata
  4. Karka Rashi Devata
  5. Simha Rashi Devata
  6. Dhanur Rashi Devata
  7. Tula Rashi Devata
  8. Vrichika Rashi Devata
  9. Makar Rashi Devata
  10. Kumbha Rashi Devata
  11. Kanya Rashi Devata
  12. Meena Rashi Devata
After arranging my dolls , I stayed for some time and helped others, before  returning to home.  The next day morning we had to be at the venue by 8 A M .

As requested by our admin Mrs Roopa Sanjay , I had to keep my 2ft tall Quilling Ganesha for the event. On 9th morning , I got ready , packed my Ganesha and left for the event. I was very scared to take my Ganesha for the event. But by Lord Ganesha's blessings , the idol was taken safely and placed properly on a table.
All the Gods and Goddessess dolls were arranged beautifully. It was a very nice view. All types of handmade dolls were displayed. It was a blessing to see more than 1000 gods and goddess under one roof.

I took some photos and videos . Our admin explained the rules. The Ganesha was decorated with flowers. All arrangements were ready for the inauguration. The adjudicator arrived  followed by lighting the lamp , song and pooja. I felt so happy to see my Quilling Ganesha placed on an auspicious occasion and pooja was done for my Ganesha. The adjudicator spoke a few words and the inspection started. We were supposed to be present near our dolls when the adjudicator arrived. It went on well , I showed my Rashi Devatas and also mentioned about my Quilling 2 ft Ganesha. We were told to wait.

They announced that we had achieved " India book of records " and "Asia book of records " for title - Maximum  handcrafted replicas of deities in a single display .

We all were overwhelmed and happy . There were so many happy faces seen celebrating the joy.  It was a proud moment for us. We will receive our certificates and medals shortly.

Some media and press people also arrived to cover the event. We took a photo with our dolls , some group photos as well .  Many people were unaware of Quilling , some of us explained about it. The event got over around 2pm and we returned home tired and exhausted.

I would express my special thanks to my family members who helped and supported me throughout the journey.

Vrishabha Rashi Devata

 Hi Friends,

The next in the Rashi Devata series is Vrishabha Rashi.  Vrishabha is also an astrological sign in Indian horoscope systems, corresponding to Taurus.

This Devata has a horse beside him. The  details of making the Devata is explained in my earlier post.

I will post the video shortly.

Let me explain the basic parts of making the horse.

  • Make an open coil using 8 quilling strips ( 10 mm ). I have used white colour strips. Make 3 such coils and attach them.
  • Make a cone shape using 10 quilling strips ( 5 mm ). Make another cone shape using 7 quilling strips and the third cone using 4 quilling strips. Attach them as shown in the picture.
  • The leg is made using two cones . One using 2 strips and another using 1 strip.
  • The tail is a bend marquise shape using 3 quilling strips.

  • Make another cone using 50 quilling strips. 10 mm cream colour strips.
  • Make 2 open coils using 125 quilling strips. This coil will be attached to the face.
  • For the trunk make a cone using 150 strips. Use 10 mm gold colour strips.

  • For the back part of the crown , I have made an open coil using the approx 250    strips.
  • You need to keep rolling the coil to get the desired measurement. Refer to the pic.
  • Decorate the crown with kundans.

  • Make a tight coil using 600 strips. I have used cream colour strips. Make a dome shape.
  • Make two such coils and attach them as shown below.
  • Make another cone using 300 gold colour strips. Attach them as shown.

 5. Lower Body:
  • Make  a tight coil using 200 strips ( blue colour ). Use 10 mm strips. Make a bucket shape and stick it to the upper body part as shown.
  • Stick the face part with the upper and lower body parts.
  • For the legs you need to make a cone using 150 quilling strips ( 10 mm ).

6. Hands:
  • Make a tight coil followed by a cone shape using 125 quilling strips. The diameter of the coil is approx 3.5 inch.
  • Make a similar size coil for the shoulder. Bend it into a cup shape.
  • Make another coil of size 2.5 inch . Give it a cone shape and attach it to the big coil.
  • The other two hands are made using 70 quilling strips.

7. Palm and feet :
  • You can refer to my earlier posts to make the palm and feet.
  • I have used 40 strips for the palm .
  • And around 30 strips for the feet.

A great Achievement - Guinness World record

 Hi Friends ,

I would like to share a special feeling , we got the "Guinness World Record for the largest display of  quilled dolls".

I feel so happy and proud of this memorable achievement.

We  (40 Doll making enthusiasts) had put our effort and displayed 3441 quilled dolls at Chennai on 18th September, 2022 , which was inspected by Guinness world record inspection team wherein each dolls was thoroughly checked to validate it meets the guidelines defined (It has to be a Human figurine, 5" height for standing dolls and 3" height  for dolls with sitting posture)

I was super exited when we came to know  in Jan 2023 that  we got the award and this was communicated by our team leader Roopa , who was coordinating with all the members and the GWR team.

Let me share my journey how I became a part  of this wonderful moment .

The Journey started somewhere during the pandemic , one of my quilling friends invited me to be part of this group , wherein the rules was discussed and each member had an initial target of around 60 quilling dolls to be made as per specification .

I decided to make it theme based :

  • Corona theme - I wanted to express my gratitude to all the corona warriors who served the entire nation during pandemic, it could Doctors, Nurses, Police , Courier people ,
  • Social Helpers theme -  In this I wanted to capture all the daily people we interact but we don't acknowledge their help, mainly the sweepers, postman, fireman, teachers, mothers ...
  • Indian couple theme -  our country is very rich in diversity we have people coming from different region following different customs , so why not capture the wedding couple how they look from different regions .
  • Yoga Dolls theme - Different yoga postures were shown
  • The fifth  category and the final was to capture some popular dances like Yakshagana, Mohiniattam ,  and finally concluded with some popular comic characters from frozen , Chotta Bheem .
In the fag end we came to know that we were short by another 500 dolls , so quickly the group discussed and agreed to add another minimum 10 to 15  dolls by each participant and with whole team effort we were able to add and take the toll 70 dolls .

As a contingency approach , we as a team had made extra dolls , so that even if there is a possible 1% rejection by GWR , it doesn't affect the record target.

March 25th 2023 was the D-day I and my friends all waited eagerly to get together as we had not seen all of them and all communication was through WhatsApp group. The moment arrived, me and my family (my parents , hubby and sweet daughter) went to the venue and had a memorable fun filled day .

I was part of inviting the chief guests, invocation song and finally got the certificate with medal , let me be frank I was on cloud nine :) .

We all had a nice chat , ended with a delicious dinner and parted happily waiting for the next target ...

I would like to thank my family members for all the support and encouragement .

It  was the most memorable day in my life ....😊

Mandala Earrings

 Hi Friends,

I have tried to make a few Mandala Earrings. I have used a MDF board ( 2.1 inch ) .

First you need to paint the board white . I have used fevicryl acrylic paint.

Draw the design of your choice. Then paint using appropriate colours.

I have also put some kundans which made the earrings look more elegant.

Attach the earring hook / stud to give the final look.

I tried to make a few to match your outfit.

You can create your own design.

I hope you like it.  Watch this space for more ..

Quilling Art Exhibit in "Chitra Santhe" 2023

 Hi Friends,

ChitraSanthe " or Picture(Art) Fair happens once a year in Bangalore , where more than 1500 selected artists from all over India display their art work directly to the public for selling. The event is organized by the"Karnataka Chitrakala parishath" a department functioning under government of Karnataka to support art work .
I had an opportunity to showcase my Quilling art work at Chitra Santhe 2020. It was a very nice experience. Lot of people appreciated my work. The response was very good. From the past two years the Chitra Santhe was organized online. I had participated at the online Chitra Santhe in 2021. But I was unhappy with the response. Maybe the people  were not able to see the detailing of quilling art online. I did not apply in the year 2022.
In November 2022 , while browsing the Chitra Kala Parishath website , I saw the details and found out that Chitra Santhe 2023 will be offline and online. I was overjoyed . I did not want to miss this opportunity. I downloaded the application form and registered for the event. The event was on Jan 8th 2023.

My preparation work began ...

This time I had good collection of quilling dolls , but was not decided which one to showcase. Last time ( 2020 ) , my quilling Ganesh was the highest selling  idol. So decided to start with Quilling Ganesh . I made 15 Quilling Ganeshas .
  • The next item which came to my mind was mini quilling doll. Many people had liked those cute little dolls so I thought why not try it out. Then my daughter gave an idea that you can make keychains for these dolls. that will be more attractive. So decided to make them . Also made some minion key chains. I had made them during my workshops.  It took me some days to complete it.
  • Then I moved my direction towards Quilling Jewellery. This time I thought of making some painted quilling jhumkas. I selected some common colours and started. I made black , blue , red and pink colour jhumkas.
  • I added a new collection to my art work - Mandala Earrings. I was trying this for the first time. So I made only 5 pairs.
  • I made some Quilling envelopes for displaying
Let me share a few pictures from my Quilling Stall at Chitra Santhe 2023

Click here to see the complete video.

I almost finished making all the items which were to be displayed at Chitra Santhe. I had not yet got any confirmation regarding my Stall. I was waiting ... in a hope that I will get selected.
Finally on 30th Dec 2022 , I received a sms saying my stall allotment is confirmed. I was overjoyed. Was a bit tensed , how I will manage everything . But my husband and family's support was a boost for me.
We had to visit the Chitra Kala Parishath  on 7th Jan to see the place and finalize it. I had not decided which art works , dolls to be displayed at the event. My husband told ,lets see the place and then decide.
Myself , my husband and my daughter went to see the area of my stall. First we need to see the list where they had displayed my name with my stall no . My stall no was 643. So we went in search of that number. It was not on the main road. It was on one of the side roads.

I was very very happy to see the place allotted to me. It was a large space . I had a glass wall which was an added advantage. That moment I decided to display some more of my quilled dolls.
I decided to display :
  • Yoga doll set
  • Corona warriors set
  • Band set
  • Couple doll set.
  • Sports person dolls
  • Community helpers dolls
  • Quilling Lakshmi idol
The wall hangings included
We came home and I started packing my stuff . Everything was finished by night .
Woke up morning at 4:30 to get ready and leave. We left home by 6:15 and reached the venue at 6:45. Quite a chilly morning. So many artists busy arranging their stalls.

First I displayed my Banner. Colourful Banner made by my lovely daughters. Thanks to them . Then I started arranging my quillling dolls , key chains , Ganesha , Photo frames and many more. The stall looked amazing.
The response was very good . Many people appreciated my work. Felt so so happy.
My first sale item was the Garba Doll Couple set.
I could sell some couple doll set , Band set dolls , Ganesha and some key chains.
I also sold some jhumkas  and mandala earrings .
Some people were not aware about Quilling . I explained to them . They were surprised as to how can you do so much using just quilling strips.

I received my Certificate . Felt so happy .

The crowd was maximum between 11 A M to 5 P M . It w.as a busy day . I started to wind up everything as I was also tired and it was getting dark. By 7 P M we closed and packed everything to return home.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to my family and relatives who stood with me and supported in the fair , I owe them the success .

A special thanks to my daughters who helped me and gave me unique ideas.

Most important , I would like to thank my customers who appreciated  and showed interest in my quilling art work.

Overall it was a fascinating and energizing experience and I am now eager to look forward to more participation and spread the art of quilling.
